How rhyming works

Two words rhyme when they share the same vowel sound and any consonant sounds that follow it. The word "dope" ends in the sound "ope" — so cope, hope, rope, scope, slope, grope, and mope all rhyme with it perfectly. The consonant sounds before the vowel can be completely different. What matters is everything from the stressed vowel to the end of the word.

Perfect rhymes share identical ending sounds. Near rhymes — also called slant rhymes or half rhymes — have similar but not identical sounds. Both types are widely used in poetry and songwriting. Near rhymes give writers more flexibility when perfect rhymes are hard to find or sound too forced within the context of a line.

Using rhymes in poetry and songwriting

Rhyme schemes give poems and songs structure and rhythm. A simple ABAB scheme alternates rhyming lines. A couplet scheme (AABB) pairs consecutive rhyming lines. In hip-hop and rap, multi-syllable rhymes where multiple syllables rhyme across words are especially valued. A rhyme finder helps identify options quickly so you can evaluate which word fits best within the meaning and meter of your line.
